I downloaded the file from HP and the notes state it is a CS429x AC9x WDM, version 5.12.01.4024 went to DriverGuide, this is the one I think you need http://members.driverguide.com/drive...driverid=34893

hey barbara, thanks again. I still cant get this to work. i get the same cannot start hardware problem. btw how do i do a system restore point. Im thinking mabey im not doing this installation correctly. What i do is once i download the file i unzip it to my documents, just easier to remember where the file is. Then i go to device manager right click on the audio controller and click update driver. from there i choose the advanced option, click dont search, click i have disk then browse and select the file from there, i get the same thing everytime with every driver. mabey im doing something wrong or dont know. thanks again im sure we can fix this . Do you think there is a problem because i dont have any service packs installed?

Set System Restore Point( this is available only for Win XP)

Start / All programes / Accessories / System Tools / System Rstore / Create a restore point, then give a name I usally use Before and the name I am installing.

The way I install is I have a Folder in My Documents named Downloads, everything goes in there, then before I unzip I create a New folder in the Download folder and name it by the file name but add unzipped to it. Then I double click the unzipped folder. I have downloaded this file, it has 3 files the one to install is CWAWDM System file 57kb.

Installing useing Device manager for Win XP
when asking to search win updates, No, not this time / Next / Advanced / Don't search, I will choose the driver to install / it then shows the driver you have downloaded.i think the reason is you are trying to update the Audio Controller when it should be the SoundMax audio.

hope this helps

I'm not sure you should uninstall the audio controller, it could be the chipset controller, the SoundMAX is the audio driver not the controller. I would just double click that file, it throws up a warning about system files so I was unable to see if it would bring up the SoundMAX installer. My techi who I help sometimes just goes ahead and installs, never bothers to remove the original.

Hope this helps

I think you should just double click the file, to update you would need to have SoundMAX driver already installed, if it is in the list in Device manager then update, if not then double click to install,

Cheers

Ok a couple of drivers from DriverGuide may work, the problem with that driver is I think it only works on Win98, you will need to register,
http://members.driverguide.com/ums/index.php?action=r
when you log on, choose Sound cards, then from list choose Crystal Semiconductors, you will then have a list of CS drivers No: 11,19,23, 23 looks the best bet as it is for HP pavilion machines,

Hope this helps
