thanks anyway...

Install the chipset driver this tells Win XP which INF files it needs to install http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-46058

these are exe. files
download ( make a note of file name ) save to desktop, double click to install - then RESTART your comp

then go to audio file you downloaded and double click to install

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE

Hope this helps

This is how to manually install

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers" or the yellow flagged device
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Hope this helps

Okay well.....i've tried almost everything and failed.Barbara,as you said,i went to the device manager.but the thing is that there ISN'T anything to update there.Like before i used to have "SoundMAX Integrated ....." there. But now its just codecs, that's all.So what you said doesn't really help.Anyway, thanks for the constant help that you provided. Before i give my laptop the the ibm guys,is there any generic audio driver which works with all sound cards?

Am working on an old IBM Aptiva Model 2270 running Windows 98SE. Just did a fresh install after a hard drive reformat. Have most everything up and running except sound. I get the infamous PCI Multimedia Device Found and of course, no driver. I tried loading the ADI SoundMAX 1885 Audio Driver from the Lenovo website (formerly IBM PC). No dice and this is the only audio driver they have listed for this machine. As you might guess, the sound is motherboard integrated and I have the wonderful Intel 82801AA I/O Controller Hub AC/97 Audio Adapter [B-1]. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Are the audio jacks at the top of tower on the I/O plate, or much lower down in an exspansion slot.I must admit I'm not familiar with the method of installing drivers for Win98SE

Cheers

They are on the I/O plate. Fortunately, not my personal computer. Whew!
