Sound problem 82801ba/bam

Looks like this is quite a common problem

I just installed XP pro on my PC and worked fine. Then I installed SP2 hey NO sound.
My 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller is telling me that it is "Driver is enabled but has not started"
I've tried all the new drivers I can find on this site and Microsoft updates but nothing works.

I have a ASRock p4145d serices mother board with socket 478 intel pentium 4 2.40 ghz chipset is North Bridge Intel 845Dstandard FSB 400 Mhz Max. 533 Mhz South Bridge Intel ICH2

Can anyone HELP?

Update the chipset from Asrock http://www.asrock.com/mb/download.asp?Model=P4i45D%2b

the INF driver - restart your comp. then install the C-media driver

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

The Chipset driver is the first driver installed on a comp, it tells Windows which INF files to load so your system works. It's not dangerous, go here to Intel, the driver is more up to date http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...nal& lang=eng

Downlod, save to desktop and double click to install

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

Oh dear, I am just so p***** off with this, all I wanted to do was installed XP and SP2 and use the PC.

Tried all you suggested installed the INF file first then re-booted and installed the driver BUT still no sound. Please HELP I am thinking of buying a sound card.

Just 1 point I have noticed that a line is missing from my System Devices list
Plug + Play software device enumerator

I have visited the MS site and this line IS associated with AC’97 but they don’t tell me how to get it back.

Check this out
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Start > OK Reboot.

Also look at this
I found this instructions when looking for an answer to this exact same problem, I followed the directions and wala! I now can see my sound card inthe greyed out areas again! Try it out fellas! Carl's solution worked like a charm for me, once I actually read it carefully enough to understand what was going on. It's truly a stroke of genius, and I strongly suggest you try his process before you go reinstalling your entire operating system. To recap in detail (for Windows XP; YMMV): 1. From Device Manager (be sure to select View/Show hidden devices), find the 'ISAPNP Read Data Port' device from the System Devices list. (Of note: once I successfully repaired this problem, this device no longer appears.) 2. Right click the ISAPNP device, and select "Update Driver" 3. Select "Install from a list or specific location" 4. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." 5. The step I left out on prior trials: UNSELECT "Show Compatible Hardware" 6. Be sure that "(Standard System Devices)" is selected under Manufacturer. 7. Under Model, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator". Select this item, and select "Next>". 8. You will receive some frightening error message that you should probably disregard. 9. Complete the installation of the driver. You will see your device list magically change before your eyes. The other PNP devices will mysteriously become enabled and active. If not, restart. Thank you for posting this solution; it has saved endless hours of reinstallation, and perhaps a marriage as well.

Hi I really need some help i'm really desperate, I just bought a video card which it looks pretty decent, but after I plugged it in to the pci slot, and tried to install the software I had a hell of a time trying to make it work, and the program took over the computer, but that's, other story!!.
The problem I want to deal with just now is that after plugging in the video card I've tried to transfer some home hi8 videos to the pc, so I went to different programs for transfering the videos, but they all seem to have something in common I DO NOT GET AUDIO, I get video fine but not audio, and if I try to go to AUDIO DEVICE it only shows Intel(r)integrated audio, and everything seems to be fine but when i try to capture the videos there is not audio, now I thought it would be because I'm using an s-video cable and i'd red somewhere it doesn't transfer audio when the camcorder is analogue, but then I plugged the s-video cable into the VCR, and went to capture video, and same thing I only get VIDEO, but not AUDIO, will it be because is something wrong with my Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller, please someone help Im getting desperate!!.

Hey problem solved.

Tried all your suggestions above but nothing worked so tried update option that was silly as the PC crashed and I had to reload windows (lost all my files).

So started back at beginning so to speak, new clean install (sound working)

Before I reinstalled SP2 thought it good idea to read-up on the MS web site.
Typed in SP2 and it gave me loads of information and recommendations.

MS recommend that ALL drivers are installed before SP2 so I installed all my drivers (including the one’s you kindly sent me)

MS also recommend that ALL available updates are installed before SP2 I found loads about 100, strange they included many SP1 updates? (I think this is quite important)

Takes so long to download and install SP2 so I looked on the web for a copy I could burn to CD. No luck I am afraid, found quite a few SP1 but no SP2, so looked on the MS web site. Took absolutely ages and could not find a copy to download and burn to disk.

BUT I eventually found a section install to many PC,s /network rather that a single PC, and found an XP pro server copy (XP-KB835935-SP2-enu) . Burnt this to CD and once all other updates had been installed installed the SP2 from disk, everything working.

All my errors have disappeared the sound is working and the plug + play software device enumerator is installed and working too.

Thanks so much for all your help hope this helps some of the many other people having problems with SP2 and AC’97
