[quote=bookworm][quote=nathan168]Hi Barbara,

From what i have found the Conexant needs the M$ UAA ( Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture ) installing first, you can get it here from HP http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...reg_R1002_USEN

Save to desktop > install then RESTART your comp > then install Conexant driver

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a
Restore point and follow instructions

Hi, I installed the UUA file from HP and then restarted my laptop. Then installed the soundmax file from the gateway support site for the 3550gz machine through the method you described in the last post.

Everything worked fine and the hardware installed correctly.

I was really excited to try it out! So I opened a real audio file (without restarting after the install) and then I got a blue screen error of death. With the note of "Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"

hmm under technical information

Use the Restore Point you created to take the comp back, the audio for your machine is Soundmax . Conexant is the Modem, have you installed the Soundmax driver.

If i uninstall the current driver, is that okay? Or do I need to use the Restore Point method?

The SoundMax driver that I downloaded from the gateway website by searching the 3550gz machine turns out to be a Conexant AC-Link Audio driver. The driver itself is the Conexant AC-Link Audio.

I do have another driver I downloaded that is SoundMax. let me try that and reply back here

Hmm, didn't work either
it installs and completes and under my device manager it installs as

Intel(r) 82801DB/DBM/DA AC'97 Audio Controller

this is from a SoundMax file I downloaded elsewhere not off of gateway

Another thing I didn't mention yet that might help. Basically I've upgraded from a 60gb harddrive running windows xp home to a 160gb harddrive running windows xp professional. my 60gb is not formatted yet and I can still load up windows and the sound does work there.

I took screen shots in the Device Manager on my old 60gb working sound harddrive.

the new harddrive is a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (i believe)
And the old one was a Hitachi

Thanks!

Ohh I finally solved it

http://support.gateway.com/support/d...id=16861214 7

that link has the SoundMax onboard sound that makes it work!
thank you so much for your help Barbara..
I'm going to post this in NotebookReview.com to help others that also format a gateway 3550gz!

thanks again for all the help!

Edit: One more thing, since you seem to be really good at these things.

I recently purchased a 160gb seagate harddrive, which was an upgrade from my old 60gb. My computer only recognizes 131gb of my 160gb harddrive. I've done some research and talked to the gateway tech support for about 1 hr and neither of us could find an Bios update for the phoneix bios. I've read that I need to do some 48 bit lba (logical block addressing) thing. Anyhow, I guess I need an update for my bios correct? Gateway doesn't provide one for my system.

Do you have any idea where I can find a bios update for this? Or if Gateway never made one am I simply out of luck?

thanks!!

You need the BIOS update that goes with the motherboard, and belarc and everest can't crack the boards, have a word here http://www.overclockeddoc.com/Forum/index.php

I have a 250GB Sata but only 238GB registers, this may be due the fact that XP uses about 12% of the drive for System Restore Points.

Thank you Barbara for your suport..actually , my mainboard is V3.0 not V1.1A .
I've tried both sound drivers and I realise that my problem was the hardware not the software
The driver for version 3.0 worked very well, no errors but no sound also.
Now I have a Yamaha soundcard on PCI and everything solved.

Thanks again for you help.
