Have you tried belarc, it usually gives a clue to the make and model, or you can pop the side off the tower, the make and model ot the motherboard is usually on the board.
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
if you can't tell post the report.

Yeah, the first thing I tried is to check the board but there's nothings there except the big PRESCOTT 533 just under the CPU.
Everest gives me Unknown description of my motherboard. Anyway, maybe this could tell you something more because I can't figure it out

Audio is C-Media but doesn't say which one, you will need to register at DriverGuide http://members.driverguide.com/ums/index.php?action=r
log on, say no to offers, or just click next offer to decline
left hand pane Drivers - Search - Simple - model: type 82801DB/DBM
choose the driver by wakemaker Aug 31 2004, it's the C-media driver
Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

No sound after format and reinstallation of XP Home
Hello - I've been reading through a lot of pages in this topic (I wanted to fix my problem by following instructions that have already been given) - and I haven't been able to resolve my sound problem.
...so I'm here to ask if you can help me out?
I had perfect sound before formatting this computer a couple of months ago, and since reinstallation of XP Home I have had no sound.
I have the Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller, and my motherboard is "Intel Corporation D850MV AAA56423-500" (if you need more information - just let me know and I'll post my Belarc results).
I've checked that onboard sound is enabled in the BIOS, checked speakers, audio settings, etc.
I followed Bookworm's instructions for a person with the same motherboard and driver as me (on the first page of this topic), and downloaded the "Integrated Audio Driver" ( item 7 in this list) - but it didn't appear to work?
Could there have been something I missed? I really appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks!

UPDATE - I installed the Integrated Audio Driver again and played some music. I was getting a lot of feedback (like the sound of a cyclone around you), but then I noticed that it was playing back in patterns (I thought - rhythm?). I switched to a song that I was familiar with and after listening very closely for a minute or so - I heard the faintest tune! I still have a problem (it sounded like playing a music box in a cyclone), but - maybe this problem is easier to fix? Does anyone have suggestions?

Notebooks are propitiatory, what make and model, Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates. better at listing models
