Try installing this way

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

hanks barbara for your help, i downloaded the driver and went to device manager to udate the driver. it changed the driver to the Avance AC97 audio but its has a problem. it is still giving me the hardware cannot start problem code10. this thing has me ready to toss it, but it sounds like it can be fixed so i need your expertise. Thanks for being so helpfull.

What model do you have, report shows audio as C-media but the Columbia board has SigmTel, need to be sure.

trying to activate onboard audio

Hello,
I am trying to activate the onboard audio system (I already went into the bios to activate the AC97 audio controller) as the system shows that there is no audio device. The OS is up to date using Windows Update. Thanks in advance.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
