i have fixed this problem...
follow my steps, open device manager, go to your audio drivers, and check the properties thoroughly.... right click device name>select properties>there should be a properties tab(click it)> then u will see 3 different selections, check properties for all three(select "use audio features on this device")... any questions YIM=urban6poet9

unable to hear sound
Im having similar problems with the other posts on this forum.
ive recently reinstalled winxp and everything works fine except the sound.
i uninstalled the multimedia audio controller to try and reinstall it to see if that fixes it. however now whenever i boot up my pc it says found new hardware and then the comp screen goes blue with an error. ive disabled the ac97 driver in my bios options so that i can access other things on my computer and not get the blue screen again. ive tried downloading and installing the ac97 driver update however the blue screen still comes up. this is what i got for the output of belarc

install this way useing the If No Setup File method
Installing Drivers
Create a folder for what you are downloading
Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder
Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here
That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)
Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation
If no Setup file
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
don't forget the Restore Point

check this first
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device
if not correct go here to Intel - install the chipset and then RESTART your comp - install audio again if needed

This problem is driving me crazy!!!
Hello Sound Queen, everything was working fine and one day when I turned on my pc all audio was missing! I hope you can help me, because you seem to be doing an amazing job so far! When I try to play movies or music it says to check if I have my audio driver disabled or that I might not have one installed.

Hello.
I came across this while trying to fix my sound. I recently did a complete reinstall, and now my sound refuses to work.
Computer info:
Computer Type: ACPI x64-based PC
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Motherboard Name: Asus P5B Deluxe (3 PCI, 1 PCI-E x1, 2 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Dual Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394)
Motherboard Chipset: Intel Broadwater P965
BIOS Type: AMI (12/27/06)
Audio Adapter: Intel 82801HB ICH8 - High Definition Audio Controller [B-0]
My problem seems nearly identical to the one another person in this thread had (Polarbear), same motherboard, same issues.
I can't install SoundMax, it gives me the error: The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware.' I get this both when trying to install from the original cd and from the latest driver gotten from the asus site. (Version v6.10.2.6110)
In my device manager the High Definition Audio Controller shows up under system devices.
As for the bios, same as Polarbear said:
In BIOS i have Onboard devices-> HD audio controller Enabled
Front panel support type is set to AC97 (other option is HD AUDIO)
Sadly his solution was getting Sp2 for windows xp, which is not going to help me. I'd appreciate any help!
