Computer info:
Computer Type: ACPI x64-based PC
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
Motherboard Name: Asus P5B Deluxe (3 PCI, 1 PCI-E x1, 2 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Dual Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394)
Motherboard Chipset: Intel Broadwater P965
BIOS Type: AMI (12/27/06)
Audio Adapter: Intel 82801HB ICH8 - High Definition Audio Controller [B-0]
My problem seems nearly identical to the one another person in this thread had (Polarbear), same motherboard, same issues.
I can't install SoundMax, it gives me the error: The audio driver files do not support your computer hardware.' I get this both when trying to install from the original cd and from the latest driver gotten from the asus site. (Version v6.10.2.6110)
In my device manager the High Definition Audio Controller shows up under system devices.
As for the bios, same as Polarbear said:
In BIOS i have Onboard devices-> HD audio controller Enabled
Front panel support type is set to AC97 (other option is HD AUDIO)
Sadly his solution was getting Sp2 for windows xp, which is not going to help me. I'd appreciate any help!

try version 4580 http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
this driver will only work if your audio plugs are on the I/O plate – see example here – click image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG
Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Thank you for the fast reply! That is indeed where my audio plugs are located.
I found those drivers on the asus site, but they were listed under windows xp (64bit). I gave them a try anyway, but it tells me the driver 'Does not support this Operating System', which makes sense. Trying directly through device manager tells me 'The folder you specified doesn't contain a compatible software driver for your device. If the folder contains a driver, make sure it is designed to work with Windows for x64-based systems.'

go to Asus and install the Chipset driver - then Restart your comp and try installing audio driver again
http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
I'm not familiar with a force install of drivers for Vista, but this is how it's done in XP
If no Setup file
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
there is a way in Vista, but I am not sure, ttry asking how to do a force install of driver in the Vista forum ♦

The chipset driver had already been installed, that didn't fix it.
It didn't actually show any Sound, video and game controllers for me in device manager, and there was no realtek or soundmax device listed. The only thing I did have was high definition audio controller in system devices. Everything I did have in device manager claimed to be working correctly.
A friend gave me a soundcard today, and I just put that in. So, I have sound again! Thank you for the help anyway

LOL....you'll laugh at this....butI downloaded the driver...but before I installed it I took a peek in my tower...in the front panel?....IT WAS FILTHY!!! And as soon as I opened it I got my sound back! I fell over form surprise naturally, but I cleaned the cobwebs and dirt out of it, and everything works fine! So, for future reference, if anyone is having sound problems, and no downloads seem to help, or its not a sound card problem....CLEAN YOUR TOWERS!!! Or take them to someone who can....it makes a world of difference! Cobwebs and dust get in there and really clog things up. But thank you, Bookworm, for your help!

these are the audio drivers from Lenovo for your model, audio is ADI Soundmax http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...&validate=true
Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
