I'm having trouble with the audio on my computer. The Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller used to function but now it doesn't and I have no sound. I first noticed it when I replaced the case fan and I am not sure where to start. Here is the Belarc report for my pc.

audio driver here at HP http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...32 99&lang=en

check this to see if Soundmax is default audio

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

I downloaded and installed both drivers listed on that driver page and neither one seemed to solve the problem. After I installed the drivers, I looked in Audio Devices. Under the Volume tab, no audio devices were found, so I could not set the volume. Under the Audio tab, all the buttons and down arrows were grayed out except for MIDI music playback where the Soundmax Wavetable Synth was shown. Under the Hardware tab, the Soundmax Integrated Digital Audio came with the message "This device cannot start (Code 10)." What else could be wrong?

I followed the steps in the guide from HP but had no luck. I went into the BIOS and made sure onboard audio was enabled. Then I followed step 8 (removing the drivers in Safe Mode). When I rebooted the computer, Windows found and reinstalled the drivers but they still won't start. What should I do?

try installing this way, by manually selecting the driver, check where you have it stored, it's listed on the download site from Compac

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
