I found where the driver was stored (c:\swsetup\sp27103\smaxwdm\w2k_xp) and used the Update Wizard but it said it couldn't find a better match for the hardware than the driver already installed. I also had the wizard search in c:\windows\system32 but got the same result. What else can I do?

When I went into BIOS, the sound options were under PCI Devices. The options for onboard audio included Disabled, IRQ 5, IRQ 10, and IRQ 11. I've tried all 3 IRQs but not disabled since that would disable the onboard audio. I've also tried shutting down the PC, unplugging the power cable, and pushing the power button for 20 seconds. Even after all this, I'm no closer to restoring the audio. I'm wondering if I'll ever get the audio working on this PC again.

Thanks for the advice, but I still have no sound. 1st of all soundmax is not listed as option iust "modem line 0 playback" . Soundmax does show up in device mgr as working properly. I've checked BIOS which indicates that audio is enabled. I've updated the drivers, checked Windows Audio and restarted the service. I went thru Dell's online troubleshooting audio guide and have done everything except reset CMOS. Now I've done the chipset install as instructed but still no sound. Do you have anything else that i can try? Your advice is greatly appreciated
