lets check the board, pop the side off the comp and look at the motherboard, the make and model should be printed on it - look at this Abit board, it will be similar - http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...otherboard.JPG

At this point, I'm a bit out of ideas, but try this, turn off the computer, then turn off the power at the source, wait, they do say a couple of seconds, but leave for about 5 mins, then turn on the power and then the comp. This should reset the CMOS and XP should find the hardware.
When I do this to mine XP goes through the found new hardware and then new hardware ready to use for all my hardware.

just looked further and you need to install the Intel chipset first, this is it
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...6&mode=4&idx=2
after installation RESTART your comp, before installing the audio driver
Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

When I tried to install the Intel chipset, I got the message "The current operating system supports the Intel chipset devices on your system. No INF update is needed." I tried uninstalling the driver and running the chipset installation again but got the same message. Still no success.

Problem solved
Please disregard my problem, I managed to solve it by installing Cirro Logic Crystal Drivers which I do not remember where I got them. Anyways thanks if you were planning to do something about it.

Barbara,
Thanks for all your help. Just one more question. Do you think this might be an XP problem? Would it help if I upgraded to Vista?
