Compatability Issues

I just reinstalled windows xp and it seems as if my sound driver is missing. I followed some of the other threads and downloaded the AC'97 driver, but during installation I get a message that says I have compatibility issues and that I should cancel installation. One of the times I tried installing it I clicked to continue installing, but my computer shut down automatically five seconds after that. What could be the problem?

Ok so sound was working fine, got pc headset/mic that used a usb adapter, after that I no longer got sound out of my speakers unless I used the usb adapter thing. Moved and lost usb adapter so haven't had sound. Went to Asus website and looked up my motherboard model and they said soundmax so installed latest driver for that and still nothing. I'm losing my mind and out of ideas so any help would be greatly appreciated.
