But there is still one small issue left to resolve. When I run the install program for the Crystal Audio Driver - my sound comes back but the sound volume control at the bottom right of the screen doesnt appear so I cant change the volume level. Also when I restart the laptop, the sound doesnt come back. I have to run the install program again and not restart the computer at the end of the process.
Any further help?

Oh ok.. I have got the volume control icon back onto my taskbar...
but the other problem still exists. Also I have noticed a slight sound from the speakers. Its intermittant. Comes and goes every 3 seconds. Never heard that before. hmmm.. any idea what is causing that? Thanks in advance.

Go back to Dell, update the Chipset, then RESTART your comp, if need be reinstall the audio
Don't forget the Restore Point
Hope this helps

No.. I have tried that.. the same problem occurs. i.e.
1) the sound will not start up on restarting the computer
2) there is an intermittent sound coming from the speakers when I install the audio driver again.

Do you have more than one set of radio jacks on your comp, are they near the top where keyboard + mouse sockets are or lower down the tower in an exspansion slot
Cheers

I have a laptop not a PC. I have sort of solved the intermittant sound problem... I just adjusted some of the controls on the volume controls window so there is just the other problem left
i.e. the sound doesnt start on start up.

Well the only thing I can think to be wrong is that it is not either enabled in the BIOS or in M$ services, and truthfully this is beyond my expertise, perhaps a new post on the lines that audio not starting at boot up, may attract one of the techies. Sorry could not solve for you

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Then go here to Intel drivers for your D865GBF board
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...4&submit=Go%21
The audio is ADI 1985 soundmax
Hope this helps

To Bookworm(barbara) no sound or sound icon
Hi Bookworm,
I have sony vaio desktop: vgc-rb53
I am having the same problem that everyone else in this discussion has mentioned. I erased a few program and next thing I know there is no sound. There is no sound icon or sound coming out of speakers. When you go to control panel/sound speeches, devices/sound and audio drivers/ it show no audio device is selected. I went to the sony vaio website and support number and reinstalled most of the drivers but for some it is asking for files. However, sony doesn't provide recovery CD. The partition has the recovery files. Anyway I was able to instal most of the drivers except for intel chipset because it keeps asking for system files (.sys). How can I solve this problem w/o having to format the hard drive.
thanks
RJ

I am having the same problem that everyone else in this discussion has mentioned. I erased a few program and next thing I know there is no sound. There is no sound icon or sound coming out of speakers. When you go to control panel/sound speeches, devices/sound and audio drivers/ it show no audio device is selected. I went to the sony vaio website and support number and reinstalled most of the drivers but for some it is asking for files. However, sony doesn't provide recovery CD. The partition has the recovery files. Anyway I was able to instal most of the drivers except for intel chipset because it keeps asking for system files (.sys). How can I solve this problem w/o having to format the hard drive.
thanks
RJ

Is sound back on your comp, is everything working ok, if so, then the chipset driver is not needed, you only need it if you are unable to install drivers or programes.
Cheers
