Thank you so much for taking the time to help me but it still wont work. i hear a little static in the stereos though. there might be a hardware problem because i have a friend with the same exact model and she updated hers from win2k to winxp as well and her audio has no problem using the default drivers. I probably need a new sound card, what would you suggest?

Ok Barbara, I've followed your instructions with regard to the chipset drivers, however I have a couple of questions,
is there any way that you can check if the drivers have been suceessfully installed ?.

The reason I ask is that when installing, the progress bar gets to 15% and then the Windows "This software has not passed windows testing" warning appears,
I click on "Continue installation", the warning disappears leaving the install page with the progress bar still at 15%

Five seconds later and without the progress bar going any further that the 15%, the page disappears and thats it, no "Drivers sucessfully installed" / "Please restart computer" or indeed anything of that description, does this sound right ?, just seems a little odd to me, bearing this in mind I have not yet tried to install the audio drivers in case I end up with the dreaded BSOD.

The reason I dont want to try to install the audio drivers without knowing if the chipset drivers are fully installed is that on a couple of previous occasions
(But not every time) and with the machine in its current configuration / settings, when attempting to install the audio drivers, after the inevitable BSOD, I've actually lost my CD ROM-RW drive from "My Computer" and again occasionaly, had quite a bit of difficulty in re-installing it / the drivers for it, dont know if this is associated with the problems with the audio controller drivers but just a little more information that may help,

Thank you and regards,
The Soulman.

been hunting around and the latest is for Win 2k, found this driver
http://www.nodevice.com/driver/CS4299/get43196.html

have a look at the Read me file.

and this is how to install, seems you have to tell XP to use the driver, it's a zip file so note the path to the unzipped files, use the If No Setup File method
Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Thanks Barbara, but unfortunately, again its the BSOD and again I've got the Yellow exclaimation mark beside the Two devices mentioned in my earlier PM's.
Both devices state Code 39, "Windows cannot load drivers for this device / they may be missing or corrupted".

The Intel BA/BAM audio controller, as is usual, states, "No drivers installed for this device".

System restore returns everything to "As before" configuration.

Regards, The Soulman.

Hi Barbara, with regard to the Win 98 SE / Win XP pro install, a couple or so years ago and because of difficulties with the HDD it was decided that I would re-install Windows XP home.
(The supplied OS)
However a Win XP home disc was not supplied with the machine, only a a set of recovery discs, unfortunately for me and despite several attempts the recovery process would not complete.
I therefore decided to first do a clean install of Win98 SE which came supplied with a machine I had bought a number of years earlier, this was a full version complete with product key etc, once installed I immediately used the Win XP pro upgrade disc again this was a legally owned disc with product key,
basically since then the only problem I've had is with the sound, although as I have mentioned before, quite bizzarely, I have had sound on a number of occasions without having done anything / made any alteration to settings etc, althought this would disappear on the next reboot and the last time I had sound was probably 18 month ago now.
Before contacting your good self I have made numberous attempts at installing drivers / restoring sound only to be met mainy with the Blue screen of death or a code 10 error "This device cannot start",
hope this helps in maybe shedding a little light in the direction of your diagnosis,
Regards,
The Soulman.

I tried to install the missing drivers by first installing the hardware, but it says that the hardware cannot be installed because it lacks a necessary entry (INF was written for Windows 95 or later??). My previous OS was also Windows XP pro, and yet it's the first time that I encountered this problem.
