Canon IS-12 scanner cartdridge

Hello,
I have a canon BJC-80 with the optional IS-12 scanner cartdridge.
The printer driver works fine but I can not get the scanner cartdridge to work.
I am using windows XP and I have installed the driver for the scanner from Canon.
I am also using a parallel to usb cable that supports bi-directional printing.
Anyone has the same and having difficulties?
I have been searching for 2 days and I can not seem to find a solution.
Any help out there would be greatly appreciate it!

Follow this path on Canon site it refers to checking settings in BIOS when useing parallel ports.
Tech Support > Printers > BJC Series > BJC 80 > Step by step troubleshooting > IS Scan > Scanning operations & errors > cannot communicate with scanner.
It may be worth trying a USB to USB to see if this corrects the problem.
