Media Player Error

Hi,

For some reason I have started getting this error whenever I try and use Media Player.....

'Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.'

I'm sure plenty of people have asked about this and I have run the report on belarc but none of it means anything to me!! Can someone help me out please.. I'm going insane!!

Do you have a soundcard [PCI] or onboard sound?
Did you get a disk with it?
Are there any yellow marks in device manager?[start/contol panel/system/hardware tab/device manager] If there is [and even if there isn't] you could right click, and either update driver or uninstall and reboot to have it reinstall itself.
Also, look in sounds & audio [via contol panel] ensure your sound device is selected from the drop down menu in the playback section.
If none of this applies; For onboard sound find out who the motherboard manufacturers are, go to their site and reinstall the mobo sound drivers. Likewise for separate soundcard, go to their site .

I have a Toshiba laptop, i'm not sure if there would be a sound card if so it came with it.

Ok in here - Other Devices - Multimedia Audio Controller has a yellow question mark on it, i've tried to update drivers but it says it can't find the necassary data.

In here it says 'no audio device' and doesn't allow me to select anything.

Should I delete the multimedia audio controller?

If you go to this Toshiba site and enter the model # in the box it will take you to the drivers you most probably need. Reinstall them and hopefully the sound will be back.
You should be able to see the model # with Belarc if you can't find it anywhere else.
