Status: Driver is enabled but has not been started.

and Device status: This device is working properly

I don t know is the folowing part relevant. I am not using native speakers( which came with machine when I bought it), I use speakers or head phones which I bought without any soft . For them I use green and pink round slots at the back of the machine. If I want to switch I just switch the pins. It didn't cause the problems for the years.

I have Legacy Audio Drivers listed under Sounds video and games controllers, but no multimedia devices under their properties. I am a bit lost with all those drivers, devices and hardwares.

Might be something wrong with the sound card?

Check this out
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

Hope this helps

Still the same. I v done as you told me, I even enabled Plug and Play and RPC - as they are under Dependancies with Windows Audio - nothing changes. All buttons in Sound and Audio Devices in Contr Panel are disabled. Volume pane says - No audio Devices. Status didn't change - Driver is enabled but has not been started.

If my guess is correct and Windows Audio service wouldn t start without Plug and Play, I think I know what I did wrong. In the Device Manager when I was checking the Audio device, I found Plug and Play device or controller or something like this with yellow triangle and exclamation mark on it. I guess it was under System Devices. And I uninstalled it. ))) It was yesterday before I registered in here. Hard to be silly, isn't it? How to get it back?

If you have a Win dis try a System File Check. Go to Run / type "sfc scannow" ( without quotes and note space after sfc) have Win disc available in case sfc needs to replace or repair any files. It just runs then closes.

Also look at this, now I can't verify this, but comes from a respected site, Annoyances.org

I found this instructions when looking for an answer to this exact same problem, I followed the directions and wala! I now can see my sound card inthe greyed out areas again! Try it out fellas! Carl's solution worked like a charm for me, once I actually read it carefully enough to understand what was going on. It's truly a stroke of genius, and I strongly suggest you try his process before you go reinstalling your entire operating system. To recap in detail (for Windows XP; YMMV): 1. From Device Manager (be sure to select View/Show hidden devices), find the 'ISAPNP Read Data Port' device from the System Devices list. (Of note: once I successfully repaired this problem, this device no longer appears.) 2. Right click the ISAPNP device, and select "Update Driver" 3. Select "Install from a list or specific location" 4. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." 5. The step I left out on prior trials: UNSELECT "Show Compatible Hardware" 6. Be sure that "(Standard System Devices)" is selected under Manufacturer. 7. Under Model, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator". Select this item, and select "Next>". 8. You will receive some frightening error message that you should probably disregard. 9. Complete the installation of the driver. You will see your device list magically change before your eyes. The other PNP devices will mysteriously become enabled and active. If not, restart. Thank you for posting this solution; it has saved endless hours of reinstallation, and perhaps a marriage as well.

I did this scan, but without disk. On my Hewlett Packard Windows is on the Hard Disk partition. Program was running less than a second as the DOS window.

I v just done this as well, and Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator was not installed succesfully (but at least it appeared on the devices list) but with yellow triangle and exl. mark again. I updated this Device right clicking on it - update Driver - and going through the Windows Update, and it worked.! Yellow triangle disappeared. List of devices had been changed as that man said. It didn't affect the sound on this stage. There was non.
However after rebooting all the devices have come back as I wouldn't do anything, to the begining stage and Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator - disappeared. No sound.

I am sure I am on a half way to it!

i dont know what to do please help

Gateway don't offer a sound drivr for your system. but your Intel D915GAG has a Realtek High Definition audio driver to download.Go here http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...4&submit=Go%21

No:3 Audio

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE

Hope this helps

This is the link to your motherboard drivers http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us

audio is Soundmax

Check this out
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Hope this helps

This is the link to your Dell drivers http://support.euro.dell.com/support...os=WW1&osl=EN#

if your audio plugs are at the top of the tower then this audio driver ADI 198x is the right one

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE

Hope this helps
