If your audio plugs are on the I/O plate near keyboard and mouse -Examlpe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQzgQ39ovZY

then this is your audio driver

Try installing this way, use the If No Setup File method
Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Toshiba Tecra M2

Barbara,
Thanks for all your help, the problem is when I go to Sound, video and game controller options, in the dropdown these are the only options I see:

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control devices
Video Codecs

I do not see a Soundmax Integrated Audio option, that I see in other laptops. Can you please help with why I do not see this option? Could the soundcard be corrupted or something, Is using an external sound card the only option (?)

thanks for all your help, much appreciated , it would be great if you could help me with this also...

Is anything yellow flagged in Device Manager, if so then right click and select Update driver and use the If No Setup File method to install the audio driver.

Check this out
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

Hello, I just got a new machine and am having difficulties with the sound. Nothing is recognized when I plug it in as far as speakers go which leads me to believe it is a driver issue. I have no honest idea what the sound in my machine is. Here are some specs on my CP from the BelArc site;
Board: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. M1689D
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. F3 07/25/2005

And under Multimedia all that is listed is Standard Game Port. I'm stumped at this point and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Checked in the controll panel and there is just a question mark on the hardware section for multimedia audio controllers. Installed belarc and the multimedia section in belarc says none detected.
