Still failing to start audio

Ok so I tied dl the driver from the link you provided .. it timeout every time. Found it at another site, dl and installed. Rebooted and no sound. Went to run>services.msc>win audio .. service was set on automatic but was not started. Started it and voila.. sound. So rebooted again and found the same issue. Did some searching and found this reg edit, but don't want to make matters worse... looking for wisdom Bookworm...

Are your audio plugs on the I/O plate or in a expansion slot, see here, click image to focus

Try a System File Check go to Run – type “sfc /scannow” (without the quotes and note space after sfc) have Win disc available in case sfc needs to replace or repair any files. The programme runs with no alerts and then closes.

Scan now

I tried this and a black screen flashes quickly without showing progress or any type of actual activity happening. Then I tried cmd and then the utility you suggested and got:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Ricardo>sfc /scannow
You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the Windows File Checker utility.

C:\Documents and Settings\Ricardo>

But I am an admistrator or at least I have those rights when I check them under Users. Not sure if I should run in safe mode instaed?

update II

SFC did ask for the xp original disk but I could not tell if anything got fixed. Also found this:

"Had the same problem. audiosrv.dll was missing from the windows/system32 directory. Fixed it by copying audiosrv.dll from windows/servicepackfiles to windows/system32"

Again, look to your guidance first...

At this point I would go for a Repair Install of XP, you won't lose settings or data but should correct any system errors, heres how

It appears that the onboard sound is being recognized, it's realtek AC'97 this is the driver http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC

if you want to use the sound card, then onboard sound needs to be disabled in the BIOS

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions
