Remove the card, and try the onboard sound, then try the sound card in another slot, sound won't work with two audio devices installed.

These are the drivers for your notebook http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s... 3935&lang=en

audio is Conexant High Definition, but note the M$ Universal Audio Architecture is also listed. This must be installed before the audio driver

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Thanks bookworm, bookworm you are genius

Bookworm, many thanks for sharing your intellect with the entire planet, especially the one‘s who can find this web page. I have a Gateway MT6452 and it came with Vista installed. I decided to change it to Windows XP and Debian Linux dual boot. This should have taken 1 hour max.

But four days later I could not get the sound to work on either O.S., so again I would like thanks you. If I could course I would have felt better expressing, my F#@3kin! thanks!

I had tried getting the hardware listing from Linux using lspci command and got this

"00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SB450 HDA Audio (rev 01)"

Then I looked it up and could not even find a drive that would work for it. Then foolish me went to Gateway’s website and that did not help, how sad the manufactures website.

Then you posted this link to the drive for Windows XP which solved the problem

http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=171875059

It downloaded this file D00664-001-001.exe

This was the solution I was looking for, for four days.

I have a question, please share with me how you went about discovering the location and correct driver. Please be as explicit, so I may learn. I owe you my sanity.

Now I have to solve this for Debian Linux, wish me good luck.

Thanks, Lindylex

Solution for Debian Linux No SOund Gateway mt6452

Follow these instructions:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto

Mine work right after it suggested I reboot, so I did not even have to finish it. Good luck if this helps.

Thank you
A bit of detective work really, at Gateway select your model from this site
http://support.gateway.com/support/default.asp

from this select Specifications
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...14362Rnv.shtml

check the chipset - RS485M + the audio
http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/...4362Rsp2.shtml

then check the Driver Downloads and note the version of the driver Sigmatel 6.10.5337.0
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...param=1014362R

now the trick is to find another model that shows the same Chipset and audio drivers with both Vista versions and XP. The model MX 6448 does
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...param=1013912R

You just have to hunt, manufacturer's don't make it easy, but it's a great when you beat them. Hope it's clear enough

Bookworm, thanks for the primer. Why do you think the manufacturers make it difficult? How do they benefit? And again you rock.
