Your audio sockets must be on the I/O plate for this driver to work. If they are in an expansion slot, then you have a sound card installed

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

Hi Bookworm,

Does downgrading or upgrading my OS solves this issue?
Since i have completely reformatted and reinstalled XP. I lost all drivers.
Back to scratch T_T....I cant seem to do the step-by-step instruction...
After reformating and reinstalling XP, what's my next move?... Everything is well except the sounds...

go here to ECS and download the Intel sound driver
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Dow...nuID=6&LanID=0

then install this way, using the If No Setup File Method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a
Restore point and follow instructions

Those two are the only icons I can see. I've checked my friend's PC and found out there should be 3 icons. I really appreciate your time

I've red your post somewhere here in this forum that with Intel, you need to update the chipset before i install the audio drivers. Is this applicable to my situation? If yes, how will I do it?

The audio driver installed is Intel(r)82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller.
(This one is the original as shown in the SOUNDS, SPEECH and AUDIO DEVICES). No yellow mark if this is used.

I downloaded the audio driver in the link you provided, followed all the instructions The audio driver now is AVANCE AC'97 AUDIO. The yellow mark has appeared this time. I uninstalled and reinstalled AVANCE AC '97 AUDIO but still no sound.

Did I did something wrong? Thanks Barbara

check this
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

what make and model do you have, a label on the comp should give this info

Please!!!, Please!!! Help!!!!

Hey Bookworm! I really hope and I was wondering if
you could help me as well.
It seems like I'm having a similar problem to everyone else,
(the same problem with no sound),

Well, here's my situation
My system got waxed by some sort of virus, and I had to take it with a
technician,(So sorry I am not a computer expert!)
Anyway,This "technician" "fixed" my computer
and every program is up and running fine but WITH NO SOUND,
I think this problem occured after reinstalling
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2,
I used to have
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP1
This laptop is fairly new. Everything seems
fine except I don't have any sound.
Just a comment, My computer, makes a beeping noise
once in a while when I start up.
I only have a system restore disc and that hasn't been
of any help.

I've gone here:
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...s=Windows%20XP
and the one in there fails.

I've tried "Realtek AC’97" and fails as well.
Ive' tried to install it in normal and safe mode way
and it didn't work.
Now is "Controlador de Audio de Intel(r) AC’97" and is not working
I've also tried to updated the drivers that I have, with no succes.
I've reinstalled the "Chipset driver" which I've downloaded
from Gateway page and restarted the computer
and I've tried to install the sound driver from the same page
and says "the instalation failed"
(I don't have any exclamation mark next to any device)

I've run Berlarc as suggested earlier in the thread,
these are my data:

I got my sound back..but...

Its so happened that 1 of the file has corrupted and I tried to reinstall Windows Service pack 3...To my surprise the sound was back

But as the time goes by, it seems the problem is there yet again... Whenever I play 3d Games, the sound disappears...even in the middle of movie streaming..

As of now, Im clueless as to what have caused this problem... Do I need to have any software to run such files?...
