check this first

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Toshiba M3 Windows XP SP3: no more sound!

Hi,

I have got similar problem with Toshiba Tecra M3: The sound has disappeared . Spent hours with Toshiba hot line trying to fix. To make it simple:

- I have updated the soundmax driver off the Toshiba site but at the end of Install I am told there is no driver and I have to restart and try again;
- Have restarted the PC many times after trying several downloads of audio driver on the desktop, using winrar and zip;
- Have tried off the original sound driver folder in C: system file: same story and message;
- Have updated the Bios;
- There are no conflict in device manager, no yellow flag or exclamation mark whatsoever;
- Tried with earphones: no sound either;
- CD are read but can't be played sound-wise;
- itunes detectd problem with audio and same with Window media player;
- "Sound properties" shows the audio codecs and legacy codecs are there, however no trace whatsoever of a soundmax audiodevice. all the other tabs are dulled and says no sound device;
- Toshiba PC diagnosis tool says there is no sound card and confim audio tests have failed;
- However the computer will still make noise if I press a wrong command somewhere. So isn't this a sign that there is a sound card?

Can anyone help me please? Many thx

No sound

Wow! A lot of people are having this problem! I am no exception... I had to reformat one of my computers because of a problem with service pack 3 (yeah... i had the endless reboots) Anyways... I reinstalled windows back to service pack 1, then downloaded and installed service pack2. There is no sound driver being detected and on top of that... I can't get internet working on it or my cdrom drive. Here is a report of that computer. Any help at all would be truly appreciated!

Operating System
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

Processor
2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
512 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Drives

Main Circuit Board
Board: ASUSTek Computer INC. NAGAMI2 2.00
Serial Number: MS1C66S07400867
Bus Clock: 199 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 3.11 09/19/2006

Memory Modules
960 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'A0' has 512 MB
Slot 'A1' has 512 MB
Slot 'A2' is Empty
Slot 'A3' is Empty

Network Drives
None Detected

Other Devices
OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard
PS/2 Compatible Mouse
USB Mass Storage Device (2x)
USB Root Hub (2x)

One last thing to add... I checked my device manager on the computer and I have 5 things under "Other devices" now all with yellow question marks on them. They are:

Other PCI Bridge Device
PCI Device
SM Bus Controller
Unknown Device
Video Contoller (VGA Compatible)

*EDIT*
I managed to get my cdrom drive working... I tried to install my ISP software and all was well, but at the end it said my computer did not have an ethernet card installed. This computer is a few years old and was used when we got it. It came with no CD's, documentation, or anything. I'm not exactly sure what kind of card is installed but I DO know it's there : P Again... any help would be appreciated!

*EDIT*
I managed to get my cdrom drive working... I tried to install my ISP software and all was well, but at the end it said my computer did not have an ethernet card installed. This computer is a few years old and was used when we got it. It came with no CD's, documentation, or anything. I'm not exactly sure what kind of card is installed but I DO know it's there : P Again... any help would be appreciated!

do you have a HP or Compac model, I think I have the board, but need to be sure as you need the chipset driver, if not sure of model get Belarc, copy and paste the report but leave out the software license and win update section
