It's a bit long winded but try this
Go here to Gateway http://support.gateway.com/support/s...fo.aspx?sn=new

input Serial Number 0033957406

an MPC window opens - click Contact mpc

if Serial number not shown - input GTW0033957406

on the link look at figures in blue ( Notebook Gateway M675X-C(PRR) ) - 1008152 - click this

At the bottom of the window click - Drivers

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ional&lang=eng

can you check this to see if Realtek is default audio

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

what make and model do you have

Hey bookworm, followed your directions, and after your last line of directions i opened this screen:

If you notice the 7/8th link down, that is what i clicked, and downloaded.

it unzipped and then attempted to open im assuming, and then prompted this box "error 2 running command notepad readme.text"

the sound driver is way down the list, 7th from the bottom, but look at the notice, from the 31st March the site will close for downloads, get them all now, except the BIOS and store on a CD

I recently did a clean install of XP w/ SP2. I have already installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled the chipset drivers, Realtek HD drivers, and ATI drivers I'm not even sure how many times. Everything checks out OK in Device Manager (enabled and working properly). Onboard audio enabled in BIOS. Windows Audio service is started and set to automatic. When I open up "Sounds and Audio Device Properties" the default device (and only option) is 'Realtek HD Audio Input' or 'Realtek HD Audio output' as is appropriate, except for the midi playback which is 'Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth'. Volume is set on high and nothing is muted. But I still have no sound whatsoever, not even system sounds. Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything here. Below is my info from Belarc. Please let me know if you can think of anything that could help, as I'm about ready to start banging my head against the wall.
