[quote=enfleshjsc]I recently did a clean install of XP w/ SP2. I have already installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled the chipset drivers, Realtek HD drivers, and ATI drivers I'm not even sure how many times. Everything checks out OK in Device Manager (enabled and working properly). Onboard audio enabled in BIOS. Windows Audio service is started and set to automatic. When I open up "Sounds and Audio Device Properties" the default device (and only option) is 'Realtek HD Audio Input' or 'Realtek HD Audio output' as is appropriate, except for the midi playback which is 'Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth'. Volume is set on high and nothing is muted. But I still have no sound whatsoever, not even system sounds. Hopefully I'm not forgetting anything here. Below is my info from Belarc. Please let me know if you can think of anything that could help, as I'm about ready to start banging my head against the wall.

Thanks for the tip. Installed the newest UAA, but still no joy. Any other suggestions? I'm starting to think perhaps I need a new sound card. Bah. In the meantime, I'm running diagnostic scans and searching for possible driver conflicts, but I've yet to come upon an AH-HA!

did it install ok
check this

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

not sure if Realtek HD is same as AC'97, but you should have a sound effects manager in control panel, this is how mine looks

you may need to check the settings

I feel like a complete idiot. After trying everything else I could possibly think of, I decided to try different connections for the speakers. Turns out that's all it took once I had everything else working. In low light certain colors look awfully similar, and according to the Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager, the connection was correct (or it looked that way, anyhow). Oh well. The rightful order has been restored Thanks for all your help!
