Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Hi, I got the same problem

My computer was freshly reformatted after some problems and now I have no sound on my computer and I cant seem to get the mulitmedia device to be found.

A quick question, and thanks for the help. I got the drivers you told me to, but the only problem now is that the sound quality is...well crap. Can I please get one last thing of help?

go back to Compac and under Original drivers install the Ati chipset driver - then RESTART your comp

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

check this to see if Realtek is default audio

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device
