What make and model is your computer, look over the tower for a sticker that gives a serial number ( S/N) or anything you find.
Do you plug your speakers in at the top of the tower near the mouse and keyboard sockets.

have you taken that sound card out of the computer, or left it in, did you go into the BIOS to enable the onboard sound.
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected.
Hope this helps

Help needed - No sound device installed
Hello Barbara,
I had a ISA sound card (ES1869) which stopped working one fine day, I think it was attributable to the electical shock, I tried all the options, reinstalling the device, updating driver and everything under the sun, then I reached to the conclusion that the sound card has died down.
Now I have got a new PCI sound card which I am using on slot 2 (started counting frm AGP slot) and the device is installed without any conflicts or IRQ errors, but in the device manager under the properties page its shows up the message as:
Driver is enabled but not functioning properly
also in the control panel in sounds and audio devices its shows up as no audio device .
here's a detailed report of my system.
Kindly help.
Many thanks

Have a look here
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic.
Hope this helps
