Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.
look at this answer from post lower down
I had the same issue; no sound; but drivers were there; everything looked fine. This stumped me for about a week. Okay; so this is how I fixed it. Go to "Start"-\"control Panal"-\"Administrative Tools"-\"Component Services". This will pull up a seperate window, on the left click "services (local)" from the tree. Go down to the "windows audio" service. If the service is on "disabled" or "manual"; right click and select "properties" under "startup type" change to "automatic"- click apply. click "start". Reboot!!
Hope this helps

Hello! I'm new around here. I've had to reinstall my windows, and now I have no sound. It's been this way for a couple months now, and it's really starting to get on my nerves since my wife and I use the computer for MP3s, and my son uses it for edu-games (he's 5). If somebody could direct me where to go to find sound drivers that work, please please please help! Thank you. I just downloaded some belarc thingy and it told me this info':

Your Abit NF7-S/NF7 motherboard has no audio driver offered by Abit, it is part of the chipset drivers ( nVidia nForce2 )
You can install the Chipset driver from nVidia, this driver has all onboard drivers included http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_winxp_5.10.html
or you can download just the audio driver alone http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_...2_win2kxp.html
Note, if you are not in the US use the International driver download site
SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Hope this helps
