Check this, it should show Realtek HD as audio
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected.
Cheers

Hi, bookworm.
It seems the world can't survive without your help. I v got a proplem with sound as well - right after installing XP home updates. I scanned my system with Belarc to find out the spec as you adviced somewhere on this forum. The properties of sound and audio Devices in Control Panel tell me that I don t have playback device or recording device or midi music device. Probably I would need to reinstall drivers, but I am not sure would I and where to get them from.

Checked HP and the Pavilion 750,UK with the Budapest motherboard showa it has realtek AC'97 on-board audio.
If your radio jacks are near the keyboard + mouse sockets on the I/O plate go here to Realtek http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false
download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click to install
The site is slow
SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Hope this helps

I didn t get about mouse and keyboard, but I used that link and reinstalled the Realtek codeks, however everything stays as it was before.
Computer Management - Device Manager - Sound, Videa and Games Controllers - Avance AC97 Audio - Properties tell that

Sorry, I didn t get about mouse and keyboard, but I used that link and reinstalled the Realtek codeks, however everything stays as it was before.
Computer Management - Device Manager - Sound, Video and Games Controllers - Avance AC97 Audio - Properties tell the next:
Status: Driver is enabled but has not been started.
and Device status: This device is working properly
I don t know is the folowing part relevant. I am not using native speakers( which came with machine when I bought it), I use speakers or head phones which I bought without any soft . For them I use green and pink round slots at the back of the machine. If I want to switch I just switch the pins. It didn't cause the problems for the years.
I have Legacy Audio Drivers listed under Sounds video and games controllers, but no multimedia devices under their properties. I am a bit lost with all those drivers, devices and hardwares.
Might be something wrong with the sound card?
