1) It says that there are no audio devices, so all the drop downs are greyed out.. why would it believe I have no audio devices?!
2) Tried re-starting/rebooting the device but to no avail.
Does anyone else have any suggestions that I can try - getting desperate now and am away in China so buying a new soundcard could be a challenge! Thanks in advance

Did you check this out

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.

Hi, same problem different box. I lost my sound, too, but only for the system sound effects and pinball, etc. Windows media player works fine, as do internet sounds, and CD's/mp3's.

I can't believe so many people are having Win XP sound probs - we've even picked up the bugs down here in Oz. Anyway, here's my (ancient) system config, etc. I have no problems in services,
Operating System

The sound card is intergrated on the motherboard - the driver is working fine - control panel, sounds and audio devices, audio is correctly using the default device (Intel (r) Integrated audio). The sound panel shows volume is up, and the mute is switched off.
Device Manager shows all devices are working fine.

Any clues or comments?

Try a System File Check go to Run – type “sfc /scannow” (without the quotes and note space after sfc) have Win disc available in case sfc needs to replace or repair any files. The programme runs with no alerts and then closes.

Hi again,

No good. In Sound panel everything was disabled. Upon looking in the device manager the driver wdmaud.sys had been disabled. When I uninstalled it and rebooted it came back to life just fine. Does that sound correct or give any clues?

After all that my sounds are still not playing.

Any other ideas? Just to let you know I ran this system with sound under Windows ME just fine. Could it be that XP just doesn't support an integrated sound card this old? Is it possible to go back to a ME-based driver that would work in XP?

Cheers

Tony

Same problem as everyone else...

OK, I downloaded that file from the location you gave me, and I unzipped it. There are a bunch of files inside and I have tried double clicking on all of them, but there don't appear to be any drivers or .exe files inside. I'm not sure what to do... Do you know the name of the actual file that I want? I appreciate all the help, I'm just still stuck. Thanks for getting back to me so fast.

The audio driver is C-Media 8738

Try installing this way
Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Still Error Message 10

OK I did exactly what you said, and apparently it installed the driver. However, I am still getting the Code #10 on my device manager, "Device cannot start"... Am I going to have to just buy a separate sound card?

Check to see if audio [Enabled] in the BIOS see here http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookworm/Soyo%20BIOS.JPG

Press DEL key at bootup to enter BIOS
use arrow keys to select SOYO COMBO Feature - press Enter
use the arrow key to select Onboard 6CH H/W Audio
If set to [Disabled] use the PgUp key to [Enabled]

If you change the audio use F10 key to Save&Exit - click y when asked

If you change nothing use the ESC key to Exit BIOS
