no sound, ac 97 drivers

hi mate, did you solve your sound issue? If not i had same problem with my friends pc, what to try is goto START>RUN> THEN TYPE: 'dxdiag' without the 's!!! Under the first page that comes up it should have system info, reply with your processor make/model and i'll see if i can find your drivers the same way i did for hers!

not sure if this will help but try a System File check

go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

need to pin your model down - look for a set of numbers like this on a label, does it show
8175-DAM if so this is your driver
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...&validate=true

if not sure get Belarc, copy and paste the report but leave out the software license and win update section

Hey Bookworm, yeh my computer is a IBM ThinkCentre A50 8175-DAM.
i tried those drivers on the website but they don't seem to work. after i installed them the computer said found new hardware audio controller and stuff and that it is ready to use, but i still cant get any sound . ive already checked to see if all the sound if turned fully up and ive also checked the bios to see if sound is enabled and i also tested the speakers on another computer and they work fine.
i had a similar problem with trying to find my network driver because the one of the ibm site didnt work and i eventually found one on another site.

any other ideas??

Thanks!

check these out first

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

if they are ok the go to IBM and install the Core Chipset - Restart your comp

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...&validate=true

make a note of where you have the audio files, and then insatll audio thia way - use the If No Setup File method

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
