any ideas?

Thanks for your help

try installing this way, by updating the Soundmax driver in Device Manager, you will need to know where the drivers are stored on the comp

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Red face

Hi. As with everyone in this thread I have been having problems with AC97. I reinstalled Windows XP and I found the correct website with my drivers http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdownloa...el=M7VIG%20400 but after I downloaded the zip file and unzipped it to download my driver, I get this a code 1 message saying that the device is not configured. I am at my wits end with trying to find out why this keeps happening. Can you please help me. It would be much appreciated.

try installing this way - use the If No Setup File method

you need to make a note of where the unzipped file are stored and point XP to use them

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update

I wanted to say thank you for helping me last time but i only get to work on my computer during the weekends. I wanted to let you know that I did try the method that you explained but it did not work. I ended up getting a new sound card (creative sound blaster audigy se) but it is still not working. I followed you steps right up to

6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver

but my computer will not let me select where the driver is. What do you think might be the problem?

Get Everest / copy and paste the Computer – Summary section. Leave out the Debug –PCI section.

I need to see the chipset and the BIOS

Solution to

How to resolve Realtek AC’97 Audio problem for Windows XP service pack 3
Cannot install sound driver after installing windows service pack 3. How do I resolve the problem?
My computer insisted on choosing Realtek AC’97 by default, and it would try to install this device every time I logged on. It would find an updated driver, but right at the end of the install procedure the computer would suddenly restart itself without warning. So I spent the next six hours trying to find a Realtek Audio driver that would work with XP Service Pack 3, but every driver I found would give me the same results. Finally at 3am I quit. Next morning, first try, I came up with the below resolution to the problem and it was so easy I was kicking myself for the next three days. Here’s the solution:

Go to Start > Performance and Maintenance > System
Click on the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager
Scroll down the list to Sound, video & game controllers
There should be a yellow exclamation mark next to an Audio Controller. Click on it
Click on the Driver tab, then click on update driver
Choose “no not this time” and then click Next
Choose “Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)”, and then click Next
Choose “Don’t search, I will choose the driver to Install”
There should be a small box with a green checkmark next to “Show compatible hardware” Unselect it, so that the “Realtek AC’97 Audio” Model disappears
It will give you a list of other manufacturers when you do that. I picked Intel for my system, and then I picked “Intel(r) 82801AB AC’97 Audio Controller”.
Click Next, and it should install this device for you from a list of drivers. If it does not, click on another Audio Controller until it does find a driver.
