No sound from laptop. Multimedia Audio Controller says there is a problem'?!'

Hi
I have a laptop running Windows XP Professional 2002.
I'm sure I have a sound card but I'm not sure what make it is.
When I go into sound and audio devices in control panel all of
the options are greyed out.
When I go into device manager there is a ? and a ! next to
Multimedia Audio Controller.
I had a look at some of the other posts which suggested using Belarc
to find out the name of the sound card in order to get the proper driver.
Which I have done.

Here is the Belarc findings for the laptop:

The belarc method applies mainly to desktop PCs and workstations.
For laptops (in which all the components requiring a driver are fitted by the manufacturer and none of them are 'user fitted') you get the proper drivers from the laptop manufacturer since most of the components are custom-made and require custom-drivers to match.

That's why it's important to choose a well-know brand when buying a laptop. They all have decent web support where you can get the correct drivers (and very often they are the only source of correct drivers for their own models). So I hope your laptop is a well-know brand with good website support, otherwise you could be stuck.

Scroll to your model - choose Audio - Clevo M22ES http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/e-services/download.asp

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions
