Missing display adapter in device manager

I tried to install the latest Nvidia drivers this evening for my ancient but perfectly working GeForce ti4600 and one of the tasks it requests is that I remove the existing Nvidia adapter in the device manager before proceeding.

Done that and now I can't see any display adapter in the device manager.

Tried to run the Nvidia driver installation and it shows as completing but when I reboot I only get a bog standard windows VGA display. Tried installing many times but no luck.

Anyone know why the Nvidia drivers are not installng?

Do you have an Intel based system, if so did you update the chipset drivers?
