Thanks!

If your Medion is an MD3000 model your onboard sound is a CMI 8738

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case

Then go here to download the driver http://www.helpdrivers.com/ingles/li...p?codigo=21377

Hope this helps

This is very important as you can see.Do you not have a sound card cd.
Anything else is a terrible way to do this.

You have to prepare before a new install.

Thanks for your constructive comments

In my defence
1) The computer does not have a separate soundcard, but is built into the motherboard, so no sound card cd. The manual stated that the soundcard was Soundblaster standard (or Microsoft sound system 2)
2) The sound drivers are not the problem: it is the actual Multimedia Audio Controller drivers that are missing, which i did not anticipate being short of.
3) I bought this PC as a package some years ago, and the manual is not exactly forthcoming about what the parts are that were used.
4) I'm not actually sure which hardware in the list above it is that actually needs the driver (since it's the multimedia audio controller rather than the sound card driver) so I am confused about what I am looking for. Is it for the sound card itself or the CD/DVD player? or the motherboard itself?
5) Believe me if I knew how much hassle it would cause, I wouldnt have bothered in the first place.
6) I didnt come on here to get flamed, and I definitely dont need someone being wise after the event, tutting at me. I was hoping for a little nudge in the right direction to recognise what the actual hardware is that I need a driver for, and maybe a hand pointing me towards somewhere I can download it. A lot of this is journey in the dark for me, and I'm trying to learn as I go along.

Whew, that feels better, I needed to vent my frustration on something!

Thanks oldtimer

I managed to get it working in the end by uninstalling the hardware, and restarting the computer. It then detected the new hardware, and when I added it, it automatically installed the driver. Hooray! It turned out I had downloaded the correct driver after all.

I'm also feeling a bit more human today. If I went off on one in my last post, it was because it was 1am (after hours of frustration staring at a flickery screen with too little sleep!)

peace out
