My 'audio device' says Modem #1 Line Playback. There are no other options to choose from.

Windows Audio Service is on auto and started, and the audio plugs are on the I/O plate. Thanks in advance.

for some reason it still hasn't worked out for me yet.
it's been a long three years without sound, and if i could kill the old room mate who did this and get away with it i probably would.

anything else i should be doing?

it says the Multimedia Audio Controller is the only thing not working properly. i've installed and reinstalled everything you've helped me with thus far.

i REALLY love you for all your help!

Ok start again, first Are your audio plugs on the I/O plate or in a expansion slot, see here, click image to focus http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

check these out

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

let me know 3 years is a long time, do you get any messages when you try to install, Soundmax can be a pain, may need to force M$ to use the driver

they're on the IO plate.

when plugged into the pink slot, it makes a faint scratchy noise whenever any music device is in play mode. but, you can't hear any real sound. the other slots you can't hear anything.

the Windows Audio was turned on Automatic already as well.

i'll keep trying but thank you again for your help and let me know what all this means when u get another chance!

Pink is usually the mic, audio can be black or green try installing this way

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

the yellow flagged device is Multimedia Audio Controller in "other devices". for some reason it's not letting me include the folder the drivers were downloaded to.
i've also tried scanning for hardware changes and it doesn't do anything.
