YASP - Yet ANOTHER Sound Problem

Help me Barbara-Wan Kenobi, you are my only hope.
XP Home - complete re-install - everything but sound!!

The essential info from BelArc:
Board: VIA Technologies, Inc. PT880-8237
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG 08/05/2004
Display: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 4000 (Microsoft Corporation)
Multimedia: none ... so far!!!

Ive been round this thing for a few hours now and cannot get sound working. My biggest question is how to unambiguously identify the on-board sound technology. Been to the VIA site and can see that VT8237 south bridge.RAID.mumble-chip is part of the mix. Dunno if that means much.

Any help would be most appreciated.

It's not giveing me what I want. look over the tower for a sticker, it should give a maker, model and serial number, or get Everest http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml

Just found the answer through trial and error (and intuitive debugging) - it was a C-Media AC97 driver. thanks for your help, especially the tips on BelArc and Everest, the latter being harder to find since they stoped supporting the *free* version.

I'll be back for more T&T soon ... you rock!

No but it does give clues to motherboard and model of comp, hidden but when you have seen as many as I have the clues are there to be seen, if you need to find drivers that are not installed this little programe can help http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...entifier.shtml
