Please help with sound device & driver

I recently reinstalled my Windows 2000 OS to resolve a bad virus problem. Since then CD's and Mp3's will not play. Nor does any audio link on the internet play. Windows Media Player gives me this error:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

I've tried Windows help links and my system troubleshooter as well with no luck. When I look at my device manager it shows "Multimedia Audio Controller" under "Other Devices" with the yellow question mark. I search for a driver, but none is found. I don't have any of the original system discs. When I click properties for the device it seems to say very little:

"Device type: Other Devices

Manufacturer: unknown

Location: PCI bus 0, device 0, function 1

The drivers for this device are not installed. (code 28)"

Please tell me what you may need from the Belarc profile..under the "Multimedia" heading it only lists "Multimedia Sound Controller"
My computer is an IBM thinkpad a21e

I came across this driveragent.com thing..does anyone know if it's any good?, I would, however prefer to avoid the cost.

All help is appreciated. Thanks

This is the link to IBM Thinkpad a21e all your drivers are listed http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...?validate=true

under Audio, choose Audio driver V for Windows 2000,98SE and ME Thinkpad a21e

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
