Hi!
ive got a similar problem.
i use an asus b50a notebook with onboard realtek soundcard.
after a windows update 4 days ago theres no sound from the headphone jack. (its Win XP with SP3)
i still have sound from my notebook boxes, and surprisingly there is even this asus jingle on the headphones right after starting the notebook.

the realtek sound manager still recognizes when a microphone is connected, but nothing happens on the line-out jack, at least notebook boxes are being muted.

i've already tried the newest driver after uninstalling the old one.
there are no questionmarks etc. in my device manager.
i also have removed the update and tried system restore at several different points.

check this first

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

if still problem go here to Asus - audio is High definition
http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us

first under Utilities install Version KB888111- Microsoft UAA

then install audoio driver

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
