Lost Sound After Downloading Windows Update!!!
I just recently received an automatic update for my pc and after restarting, I lost the sound on my pc. I found out that I dont have a sound device when I looked into the audio options. I believe the name of the device was VIA AC'97. My pc is also showing up as not having a sound card (dont know if these are both the same thing). I've been at this since 10am this morning, can someone please help me. Microsoft is clueless.

Have you tried a System Restore to before the updates were installed. What make and model is your comp, if your not sure get Belarc and copy and paste the report. http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Hope this helps

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
The board is an ASUS A7V-VM OEM by HP. HP offer no audio driver but ASUS does as well as VIA
Go here to ASUS http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us
Input Model to Search - type A7V / select A7V1-VM / Drivers tab /scroll to V1.40a for Win XP
Via also offer this driver here http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...SubCatID =154
read installation instructions on VIA site
Hope this helps

I Went To The Website, Downloaded The File And Followed The Directions. Everything Seemed Fine But Then I Received An Error Message During Installation Saying It Cant Find The Hd Audio Device. It then mentioned that one component wasn't installed which I'm assuming is because of this HD Audio Device. What Should I Do Now?

from what I can see this is a HP Pavilion comp, XL844, and no audio is offered by HP. That means that a sound card may be installed, can you look over the tower for any sticker showing the model or serial number, serial will look like this S/N and is this a US comp
This driver is for the onboard sound, if disabled in the BIOS it can't find it, but get the information for me, I suspect a sound card installed.
Cheers

nowhere on HP does it give this audio, I think it's a Crystal Sound but I need the version, can your brother check Control Panel / Sound & Audio / the Audio tabe and see what the default device is. Then we can pin it down.
Cheers

Actually The Device Is Now Missing Since The Update I Downloaded. I Do Recall Part Of The Name If Not The Whole Thing As Being 'via 97 Audio' Or Something Like That.

Hey Barbara
Niether one worked. The first one just showed up as an icon and when I clicked that it was just some type of media player. After downloading the second one, it showed a progress bar that said the wizard will guide me through the setup but the wizard never opened.
In the device manager these items are listed
Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Media Control Devices, Legacy Video Capture Devices and Video Codecs.
My pc still says there it cant find an audio device either.
I'm so frustrated lol.

I had the same issue and found this post so thought I would post what I found that happend to me.
I had the windows update and had no sound so was wondering why and all my sound components and plugs were plugged in and no issues in my control panel
I went to sounds and devices and Saw that the MUTE Button was Clicked. I know I did not do it since I have to go thru the control panel to change my sound. I removed the sound speaker icon from my task bar awhile back.
Not sure why an update would put a check by my mute button but apparently it did somehow.
Hope you got your sound working if not check to make sure its not muted like mine was:}
