INF Error w/ ATI. SOund familiar? :)

OK, I sound like a broken record here with all of the INF posts, but I've tried all the solutions I have seen here so far and nothing seems to help. The ATI and Sager technical support are about as helpful as a kick in the teeth. Anyone who fixes my problem gets a six pack of their favorite beverage! : )

The Set-Up:
I have a laptop built by Sager Notebooks, model #8890. It has an Intel(R) CPU w/ 3.00 Ghz processor, and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo, on the PCI Bus 1. The current driver is 6.14.10.6414. Software is Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2.

The Background:
I had a hard drive failure a while back, and had to buy a new hard drive and re-install with a new windows XP disk (The one that came with comp didnt work). PRIOR to the hard drive dying, there were no video problems whatsoever. Now that I have reinstalled the OS, and reinstalled all drivers from the Sager website for my model, certain videos (I dont know what type as they are within games and programs) will just run as black screens with the audio still playing.

The Problem:
When I attempt to do ANY type of ATI driver or ATI software update, I get "INF error. Video driver not found." and a "Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."
In my Device Manager I see under Other Devices - Multimedia Controller, and Multimedia Video Controller, as big yellow question marks. I have no idea what they are, or what they are supposed to be.

Attempted Solutions (Didnt work):
Re-installed chipset drivers. Nothing.
Tried installing many different versions of ATI drivers and Catalyst, including the latest. I get the INF error in setup.
Tried reinstalling all ATI drivers that came with backup. No change.
Turned off the multimedia controllers in the Device Manager. No difference.

If you need more information, please let me know and I will be happy to provide.

Thank you.

Chris

Get belarc http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

copy and paste the report, it should give us the motherboard and will be able to check drivers. The chipset drivers need to be installed first then the comp RESTARTED, they should if possible be installed before the Win OS, I noticed a Smartlink modem is installed, did you update this driver. Did you try the older Radeon driver that is listed.Did you format the hard drive before installing Win XP

Hope this helps

I will try to udpate the smartlink modem and will let you know.
I have tried to update the Radeon driver, I get the INF error when I do.

OK, now it is important that you set a SYSTEM RESTORE POINT before installing this driver from Clevo for your motherboard,as they are keen to point out to go to your notebook vender for drivers

Your boaard is a Clevo D800P and they have a VGA driver, go here
http://www.clevo.com.tw/download/ftp...=2&submit=+GO+

Hope this helps

Hmmm, still no difference.
I tried to install one portion (the WHQL) and it would immediately crash the computer.
And the .INF 9x setup file wouldnt even install (couldnt find setup file).

The drivers installed but had no effect.

I have no idea what is going on.

I love how my multi-thousand dollar computer is at the mercy of a tiny software program.

Quick question? Is this the driver you have tried? Follow this link, then at the bottom of the list, select Notebooks with ATI Graphics, then Catalyst Mobility 6.7 for Windows XP.

.inf errors are generated from unsupported hardware

You will note that the page states "ATI recommends Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher to be installed." Do you have sp2 installed?

Yes I have SP 2. The Catalyst Mobility - or any of the ATI software for that matter - will not install with this error message: "INF error. Video driver not found." and a "Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup." After the message the setup aborts.

Re-installing the vendor drivers either does nothing or in some cases causes the computer to immediately crash.

Can you run sfc /scannow, to check if Win XP system files are ok. First go to Device Manager / View / show hidden files. Then go to Run / type "sfc /scannow" ( without quotes and note space after sfc ) have your Win XP disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any damaged files. It will show status bar as it runs, at end it will just close.

Hope this helps

My suspicion leans to the fact that a new HD and new Win XP were installed. The fact the original OS would not install could mean that some drivers are on the original XP disc. try a Repair Install, see here on how to http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

have a word with Sager check whether some drivers are on their disc or if it is a genuine XP disc. it;s just a thought,

Hope this helps
