Help with audio driver

Hi there
I'm having trouble finding the right combination of drivers for my computer. My motherboard is a OME Microstar MS-6511 Version 1 built by NEC I belief. I used to use the onboard sound with a Sigmatel Driver but I have lost the information which one it is. I then upgraded to a C-Media CMI-8738 PCI Soundcard and when I installed the driver that came with it I didn't get sound. Sound and audio devices properties says 'No Audio Device'. Before I upgraded the sound I tried updating the platform driver for the motherboard from a VIA 4 in 1 to the Hyperion version but that made my CD-drive disappear so I reinstalled the VIA 4 in 1 driver. I'm unsure about which components Windows requires to produce sound and if the motherboard needs software, too and if so what.
I'd be greatful for some help.
