Need PCI SCC Driver

Greetings! I'll start off saying it's a good thing finding this site. I have a feeling it will help me out more than once. I searched a little bit on the question that I will ask, but the parameters I gave to search were too specific and I couldn't get any results. Surely this has been asked a million times but hopefully you can help.

A friend of mine recently had cable internet installed on his computer (kind of). The installer could never get the system online. We had the Tier 3 support on the line from the cable company but they couldn't get this figured out either:

My system: Windows XP 2002 SP2
Ethernet Adapter: VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter
Hardware: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 2800+

Basically I have narrowed down that I have no drivers installed for my PCI Simple Comm. Controller. (This is the Error Message I received in my device manager).I am having a difficult time knowing for sure which driver will work on this system in order to get my connection going. My modem is operating properly and it even shows the connection to the cable companies server. I also don't have a TCP/IP addy. Normally this should be found when I reset my modem, correct. I am assuming that it's not detecting a TCP/IP due to the PCI not communicating with the rest of the system. Correct me please if I'm wrong.
Can any one point me in the right direction for a driver and give me some insight on the whole TCP/IP thing? Thanks in advance.

It's the other guy (friend) with the problem. I loaded XP back onto the system hoping for the drivers to be reloaded and I still get the same message in the device manager. Simple Communications Controller: Drivers not found/Drivers not installed. As I read through many of these posts, it seems like I am experiencing the same problem as many others missing drivers for their audio/video cards. Everything else on my friends computer is operating fine.

The cable company is COX. They don't seem to be much help. But I have deducted that the problem is with XP and not the cable company. The cable company is seeing connection to the modem that they installed and I can manually check the STATUS of the modem and see the connection time counter. The system is not picking up the VIA Rhine ethernet adapter which is installed in one of the PCI slots. I'm confident that I need to find the correct driver for the PCI's, but I am new to XP. (I don't run XP on MY home Computer). Any thoughts? Thanks in advance Oldtimer!!!!!1

EDIT: His computer was running a VIA 1394 adapter before this installation. I have checked it's status numerous times to find it 'not active' i.e., no conflicts.

Yes the cable television works just fine. And yes he has just gotten his first bill with the internet charges added in. Horrible customer service right off the bat. So you would say to try the Linksys.

So basically, remove the current ethernet adapter, reload XP, install linksys 10/100. The linksys adapter doesn't run from the PCI, or it does? That part was unclear to me.

What would be the next logical step if the problem/error message persists? Thanks for your help so far...

This all seems what it should be.
Open Internet Explorer. What is listed as home page ? Are you there ?
What happens when you paste this in address and type enter ?
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/
Can you browse anywhere ?
If you can get here with this PC ,why can't you compare these settings.
Your server should want to keep your business.
If none of the above doesn't work heres what Rogers had me do.
Disconnect the modem wall or powerbar connection for 10 min.Plug it back in and it resets your modem.
Note : Not connections to your PC.

You cant browse anywhere, no matter what address. There is no home page that comes up. I have already tried resetting the modem to no avail. I still get the error for the simple communication controller. I'm still confused.
I still don't show to have a TCP/IP address. I have gone into ipconfig and have no information there.

If their listed, dbl click and see if it says "use this device"
If not you either need a new one.
If it's internal, pci LAN cards are very cheap.

Ok. I will check that. I cant believe I didn't check that first actually. That's why I don't get paid to do this stuff! LOL. If this is an internal, what information do I need in order to select the proper card? Thanks in advance!
