Problems with sound on my computer

Someone kind!

I was hoping someone would be able to help me. I have installed an English version of Windows XP but after doing this I experienced a similar problem to others on this website, I have no sound. Reading through different entries on this site I have tried to install various drivers with no success. In the 'Audio' section in 'Sounds and audio devices' in 'Control Panel' the 'Default Device' section is greyed out saying "No play back devices".

It is my father's 60th birthday this Monday and it would be really nice if I could speak to him on Skype. I spent lots of time trying to work this out but have come to a dead end. Please help!

Here are the details on my computer:

Check this out
look at this answer from post lower down
I had the same issue; no sound; but drivers were there; everything looked fine. This stumped me for about a week. Okay; so this is how I fixed it. Go to "Start"-\"control Panal"-\"Administrative Tools"-\"Component Services". This will pull up a seperate window, on the left click "services (local)" from the tree. Go down to the "windows audio" service. If the service is on "disabled" or "manual"; right click and select "properties" under "startup type" change to "automatic"- click apply. click "start". Reboot!!

Hope this helps

Problems with sound on my computer - continued!

Hi Barbara,

Thanks ever so much for your reply. I had started to think that I was not going to get any response. I tried what you suggested but unfortunately I had no luck. The Windows Audio services was already on automatic. I tried switching it to diabled and then re-activating on the off chance something might happen, but it had no impact. Under Sounds and Audio devices it is still blanked out and says "No Playback Devices" under the 'Default Device' section in the Audio tab.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks ever so much for your time I really do appreciate it.

Matt

Check these so;utions out
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

Found this at Annoyances.org
Here is the REAL answer!! =)

I found this instructions when looking for an answer to this exact same problem, I followed the directions and wala! I now can see my sound card inthe greyed out areas again! Try it out fellas! Carl's solution worked like a charm for me, once I actually read it carefully enough to understand what was going on. It's truly a stroke of genius, and I strongly suggest you try his process before you go reinstalling your entire operating system. To recap in detail (for Windows XP; YMMV): 1. From Device Manager (be sure to select View/Show hidden devices), find the 'ISAPNP Read Data Port' device from the System Devices list. (Of note: once I successfully repaired this problem, this device no longer appears.) 2. Right click the ISAPNP device, and select "Update Driver" 3. Select "Install from a list or specific location" 4. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." 5. The step I left out on prior trials: UNSELECT "Show Compatible Hardware" 6. Be sure that "(Standard System Devices)" is selected under Manufacturer. 7. Under Model, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator". Select this item, and select "Next>". 8. You will receive some frightening error message that you should probably disregard. 9. Complete the installation of the driver. You will see your device list magically change before your eyes. The other PNP devices will mysteriously become enabled and active. If not, restart. Thank you for posting this solution; it has saved endless hours of reinstallation, and perhaps a marriage as well.

Hope this helps
