no sound - xp pro - pc acer aspire t620
Hi,
I have no sound left.
I have a pc Acer Aspire T620 which had XP home installed (fat)
Due to instability, I formatted the hd and installed a version of xp pro (ntfs).
I installed also SP2.
The thing, very few components were correctly installed.
I managed to install most.
I still get a problem as there is no sound, and no sound device recognised.
It is an onboard component, not a soundcard.
The intel chiputil gives me that:
Intel(R) 915 Express Chipset family
Memory Controller: 82915G/P
I/O Controller: Intel(R) 82801FB I/O controller hub (ICH6)
there are 4 drivers from acer site that don't work and nothing more.
I downloaded an ATI gfx generic drivers for sapphire radeon x300 se but when i reboot the pc tere is no image with a message: format not supported. I managed to find a DNA-ATI driver which actually works fine.
I have one component from the device manager view that does not install, it's recognised as PCI device but apart from the gfx card, nothing is connected on pci slot. maybe it is the onboard audio.
But i cannot find the correct audio driver. I think it should be a realtek one but none worked till now.
please could you help?
thanks,

had a look at the audio driver from Acer. it's Realtek High Definition, but first I would update the Chipset driver from Acer, Intel advice to install before any drivers are installed if you are sure of the chipset you can also get it from Intel, No:1 or No:6 in the list http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...pire_t620.html
then Restart the comp
you can also get the Realtek driver here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false
download save to desktop double click to install
Set System Restore Point before installing just in case
Hope this helps

it worked!!
Hi many thanks bookworm it worked!
I did exactly what you suggested and it worked. I took inf util number 6.
Actually I thought I already did that but I never got that driver wdm_r154 from realtek. I got others which did not work.
Well done again and wish u a happy new year!
my sound is back!
I was wondering going to buy a new soundcard.
Anyway it is good to be patient sometimes, especially with computers. I won't give up against a machine, even w chess..
Cheers,

bad news
ok I have been heavily infected by viruses and unfortunately my antivirus kasperksy was turned off. I had spybot up to date but this was not sufficiant to clean all. even by doing cleaning from safemode point. And kaspersky does not start in safe mode. It is a bad point compared to norton which I don't prefer actually.
anyway no other options than format c:
I went this time for a win2k.
lets go again..

The same links to drivers that I gave before will work with Win2K, install the Chipset driver, RESTART comp then install the Realtek high definition audio
Try AVG7 a free antivirus programe, I,ve used for 3 years now with no problems http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
Hope this helps

too late
something went wrong with win2k. could not install the intel chipset iata62 this time. I kept having the message win2k "does not meet the ninimal setup or something". I had problems also to install wireless 802.g bus and wireless usb small stuff.
I think I needed something else to make it work or I did a bad start with a wrong install order. I did not want to waste time too much on this. I decided to go again with an XP as it worked before. It should work with the drivers I have now. I will install the intel chipset first and restart.
I will try AVG7 but the best I had was Kaspersky. The only issue was you cannot run it in safe mode, if you are infected. Can we do this with AVG7?
Anyway it is always better not to become infected but it could happen sometimes. maybe I will install both just in case.
Thanks for your help

Use only one antivirus programe, if you have 2 then there is the possiblility they will not work

back online
good news am back online.
This time I had problems to install the driver for the usb wireless network stuff. But other drivers went fine.
The autol inf of intel ran ok but the other iata6 that was supposed to manage the chipset never installed. I needed it first time for audio problems but this time all installed correctly apart from those mentioned. I don't catch all. Anyway. It works
Thanks again for your support,
Muaddib
