Sound problems, drivers disappeared
Hey there, would appreciate any help as this is really troubling me...
This is what happened...
Was playing some games, suddenly my speakers+head phones started to make scrambling noises and would stop and start. Then after a few minutes the scrambling would continue to the point where there would be no sound. This would always happen when I play music or games (anything to do with sound). The computer would have no sound after that and an ASUS Audio program would pop up ask to re-connect the speakers and when i would click ok, that blue screen would come up and my system would reboot automatically.
When i would go back into windows after rebooting there would be no sound, i looked into Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel and it would say there is No Audio Device.
I had installed service pack 2 and had all the drivers up-to-date. Tried re-installing same sound drivers and different sound drivers, but nothing would work.
Just formatted my pc, was going fine...sound was working, updated the drivers, scrambling again...same thing happened again!
Need some help please.

I have 2 versions of this board, Deluxe and Premium, they use Realtek ALC850, before installing any audio drivers update the chipset drivers it is listed under Others in the link http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
Restart comp after installation and before installing audio drivers
then go to Realtek to get the most up to date drivers http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false
download the (Excutable file) save to desktop, double click to install
The site is slow
Set System restore Points before installing each driver just in case
Hope this helps

Check these out
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic.
Hope this helps

Anything you can get me to do or look at to see if its a driver issue or something is wrong with my sound card??
Thanks for all your help so far

Just looked at mine, at bottom I don't have tick in "Use only default devices"
I'm not sure if it makes any difference but worth a try
Are you useing the onboard or a sound card, onboard are on the I/O plate about midway up the tower, a sound card jacks will be much lower down in an expansion slot, by any chance do you have 2 sets of radio jacks,
Look at this as well
Found this at Annoyances.org
Here is the REAL answer!! =)

I found this instructions when looking for an answer to this exact same problem, I followed the directions and wala! I now can see my sound card inthe greyed out areas again! Try it out fellas! Carl's solution worked like a charm for me, once I actually read it carefully enough to understand what was going on. It's truly a stroke of genius, and I strongly suggest you try his process before you go reinstalling your entire operating system. To recap in detail (for Windows XP; YMMV): 1. From Device Manager (be sure to select View/Show hidden devices), find the 'ISAPNP Read Data Port' device from the System Devices list. (Of note: once I successfully repaired this problem, this device no longer appears.) 2. Right click the ISAPNP device, and select "Update Driver" 3. Select "Install from a list or specific location" 4. Select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." 5. The step I left out on prior trials: UNSELECT "Show Compatible Hardware" 6. Be sure that "(Standard System Devices)" is selected under Manufacturer. 7. Under Model, scroll down until you see "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator". Select this item, and select "Next>". 8. You will receive some frightening error message that you should probably disregard. 9. Complete the installation of the driver. You will see your device list magically change before your eyes. The other PNP devices will mysteriously become enabled and active. If not, restart. Thank you for posting this solution; it has saved endless hours of reinstallation, and perhaps a marriage as well.
Cheers

I have been looking for an answer to this problem for probably half a year without really finding anyone, so I hope that you can find a way to solve the problem.
It seems that I have the exact same problem as Punkish except that my motherboard is doing other weird stuff. I'm having the exact same motherboard as him.. Have tried all the ways to solve as they were mentioned here. And like punkish I got nothing out of that really.. Just the same as him... I have been using an USB - Headset, but now it failed so I would like to revive my old motherboard driver so I actually can play games with sound for once..

Can you check Event Viewer to see what the problem could be
Right click My Computer / Manage / expand Event Viewer / System / look for red x's or yellow warning triangles / right click - then click the link to M$ Help & Support - agree to send link - What does it say
Cheers

User Action
If an error report was generated for this error, you might be able to obtain more information about the error by sending the report to Microsoft for analysis.
What to expect
Microsoft actively analyzes all error reports and prioritizes them based on the number of customers affected by the error signature contained in the report. When a report is submitted, Microsoft will try to determine the cause of the error, categorize it according to the type of issue encountered, and send you relevant information when such information is available. However, because error reports do not always contain enough information to positively identify the source of the issue, Microsoft may might need to collect a number of similar reports from other customers before a pattern is discovered. Although Microsoft might not be able to provide a solution for your particular error at this time, all information submitted is used to further improve the quality and reliability of our products.

Hello!!!
First, sorry for my bad English.
punkish09, in the description of your problem, I saw exactly my problem. The same mother board. The same symptoms, the same sequence of errors.
In my case the problem was with the NForce4 chipset. it was heating. It's temp its temperature arrived 45ºC. The problem? The chipset's cooler stopped work. I don't know if you know, but the chipset's cooler of Asus A8N-SLI is very problematic. It simply stops work.
I really don't know if this will help you. That was my problem. Hope this helps.
