Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

Then go here to Abit and install the Chipset driver, the Restart your comp
http://www.abit.com.tw/page/uk/downl... CHTEXT=KV-85

then check this out
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic

Did you use the old HD?

Hope this helps

hi,

thanks for your help. i followed your instructions but i'm still having the same problem. under the windows audio service it was already set up as automatic and after installing the chipset drivers nothing changed. i checked the windows audio part afterwards anyway and it was still automatic.

any other suggestions? thanks again.

Did you have a new Hard Drive installed or use the one from the emachine, I ask because in this instance a Repair Install of Windows should correct any problems

Cheers

Try volume control.

Hi
Open the volume control up.. Does it work OK?
If it does - are there any items 'muted'. If it doesn't - whats the message?

Check these out
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Properties/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

Whats showing in Device Manager, any problems showing,

This is how to do a Repair Install http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Hope this helps

realtek AC'97 sucks

Hi Barbara, I hope you'll be the one to help me. I recently changed my hard drive of my HP Notebook. I didn't have any recovery CD's so I bought a Windows XP Home edition. I downloaded all the drivers available for my notebook from the HP site. My problem is the same as described previously. When I use a headset, the mic doesn't work and I still have sound from the speakers. I tried everything possible inthe "volume cotrol" and the "sound and audio devices". When I go to "sound and audio devices" to the "audio" tab. it's impossible to open neither the volume for the mic nor the "advanced.." features for the mic... I tryed different drivers for realtek but it's the same thing. The resumé of my system is:

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

2.80 gigahertz Intel Celeron
8 kilobyte primary memory cache
128 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Board: Hewlett-Packard 089C 31.45
BIOS: Hewlett-Packard F.45 04/06/2005

40.06 Gigabytes Usable Hard Drive Capacity
32.80 Gigabytes Hard Drive Free Space

HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N [CD-ROM drive]

SAMSUNG MP0402H [Hard drive] (40.06 GB) -- drive 0, s/n S03WJ10L672004, rev YQ200-06, SMART Status: Healthy

384 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'U5' has 256 MB
Slot 'U6' has 256 MB

Network Drives
None detected

Standard floppy disk controller
ATI PCI IDE Bus Master Controller
Primary IDE Channel [Controller]
Secondary IDE Channel [Controller]

ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9000/9100 IGP [Display adapter]
Default Monitor (2x)

Texas Instruments PCI-1520 CardBus Controller (2x)

Realtek AC'97 Audio

These required security hotfixes (using the 11/14/2006 Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary) were not found installed. Note: CIS benchmarks require that Critical and Important severity security hotfixes must be installed.

I'm sorry but it didn't work still the same problem. Any other suggestions? I downloaded Driver Detective and it finds that I have four drivers to be updated: one is for my optical mouse, then I have Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC, then Realtek AC'97 Audio, and Standard Enhanced PCI to USB controller... I guess only the Realtek AC97 audio is my problem now .. but I don't get it why it is not up to date if I downloaded it from the HP site and I also did what you told me to... unfortunatelly Driver Detective wants me to pay in order to find it and install it ... I still don't want to pay for that... I already paid for a new Windows....
Hope you'll help me
