thanks for helping out, this is what happened...i went and downloaded the driver for my media center edition, and it installed fine, told me to reboot to finish installation. i did, when it started back up, still no sound. but, where there used to be a yellow question mark there is now a yellow exclamation mark...(audio of course). i tried to go to control panel>sound/audio>devices to see if the driver was in fact installed, and all it said was the following error:This device cannot start. (Code 10)
i havent tried the vista version yet, id like to see if i can get the media center goin first, then i might not even attempt the vista after all...lol. any ideas on what else i could do?

Take a look here http://www.overclockeddoc.com/

Windows Problems & Solutions - donald92duck's post, RB-Rocket has a solution. The driver has installed but you have to make windows use it, it's a very clear instruction.

Hope this helps
