intel 82801aa ac97 nofunction in win98 on dual xp/98 system

I have built a system using 2 HDs one containing XP-Pro and the other 98SE each on their own HD (I use a toggle switch to set master/slave per OS) By the way, I got the unit off the curb. XP works OK. The problem is finding a driver for the on-board audio when running 98. XP shows a number of drivers all related to 82801AA.... I searched and attempted to install a number of drivers from intel, ASUS, and crystal semiconductors, as ASUS indicated that that is the "sound chip" maker for the ASUS MEW-AM mobo installed in this unit (HP Pavilion model 8710, system # D7205U) This Unit was originally running ME but never completed the boot (hence on the curb). The WDM driver is the only driver 98 seems to want to instal if I try to "update driver" (hardware manager indicates it is working yet I get no sound. Please help, I've been at this for three days. BTW HAPPY NEW YEAR!

HD just crashed but would still like the drivers

my win98 drive crashed while copying files across my home network so my "happy new year" just became not so happy. However, I will eventually be attempting a data recovery on that drive and reinstalling 98 so the driver(s) requested above will still be needed. Thanks in advance for any help on this issue.

FYI - I think the HD got zapped by static as I got a zap myself when turning on the system this morning.

Go back to Asus board MEW-AM http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us

under Utilities you will find the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility ( this installs INF files to the target system)
install then Restart your comp. Then install the audio driver again

Hope this helps
