Unhappy HELP - I know little about computers & now it wont recognize any CD drives

OK - I am very computer illiterate, but PLEASE I need serious help. I can't afford to take my system down to a comp store and pay them $200 to tell me what the problem is.

My computer just does not recognize any CD Drives I have installed anymore - they were working fine (honestly I hardly use them) but I tried to install the Burning Crusade upgrade & noticed it wont load & neither will any other programs I tried or music CD's. When I checked the driver devices they show up with yellow exclamation marks & I get a CODE 39 error all the time from WINDOWS XP.

I actually went & bought a new CD drive and hooked it up - hoping the others were just old, nope didnt recognize it or that I installed any new hardware.

I am clueless as to what to do - if nayone can help me I would be eternally grateful. Let me knwo if you need any info just know that I dont understand any computer language (sorry for my ignorance).

I'm also on MSN messenger (boobookitteef@hotmail.com) if you can help me through chat.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE - THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

yeah - Comp USA told me it would be $130 to diagnose & Best Buy said $199 ... I haven't messed with any cables except just to make sure they were all still secure inside ... oh and of course changing out the CD drive - I did use the new jumper cable it came with & just made sure to plug it in the same way it was before. The drives have power the little light turns on when I put a disk in - just nothing loads up & I don't see the drives listed on my comp.

The guy I talked to at Comp USA did say he suspected it was a software error & told me I might need to uninstall & reinstall things - problem is, I got this computer from someone else, so I dont' have any of the installation materials for XP or any of that.

Code 39, probably the drivers are corrupt. Look here:

I'd try deleting the upper and lower filters as described in the link above. Good luck. Please post back whether you solved the problem and how exactly it was solved.
