Reinstalled Windows XP but lost sound

Hi,

I have reinstalled Windows XP Professional but seem to have lost sound.

Musicmatch Jukebox returns the error message “MMJB Soundcard Problem, WaveOut Format not supported”.

Motherboard Chipset - Intel Grantsdale i915P
CPU Type - Intel Pentium 4 530, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)

Does anybody know what this problem may be?

Thanks in advance.

Almost certainly you need to re-install the soundcard driver which has been wiped off when you re-installed XP. While XP is able to detect and install it's own drivers for many devices, it does not have drivers for everything -- especially devices which are newer than XP itself which is now some 5-6 years old.

If your PC was supplied with a 'Recovery Disc', that would have had all the necessary drivers on it which would have been installed by default whenever the recovery process was run. This does not happen when you use a regular XP setup CD.

Before we can help you we need to know either make/model of PC or make/model of motherboard (not the chipset, that's no help with sound drivers since several motherboard manufacturers use the same chipset but a different sound device; or the current owner may have fitted a better one.

If it's a big name PC like Packard Bell, Compaq or Dell, they carry drivers on their respective websites (just select your PC model). If not a big name then download 'Belarc Advisor' from here:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Run it to produce an audit of your PC specs. and post it to the forum.

To cut a long story short after numerous phone calls (at £1.50+ per minute), I have been told that I need to download and install Realtek AC97 audio driver package a3.97.

I have downloaded this and run the installation program but after restart still no sound.

I have checked My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager
But under Sound, video and game controllers there are no references to ‘Realtek’.

Is anybody able to offer and further assistance?

Hey Alan

For £1.50+ per minute I will call you myself ....sorry to hear you had to go through that......

Here is thing.....The Belac program does not report the hardware properly...I have looked at your initial post...if you look you will see that is says "Sound Blaster 16 or AWE32 or compatible (WDM)" that throw me out ...but looking at it more carefully I can see that your Motherboard is Intel 915G chipset family:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-011594.htm
Download and install the Intel Chipset utility first.

Then download Realtek driver from this site:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

Hope this fixes your sound issue.

Cheers

Check these out
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Properties / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

This is the link to your FIC 915G/PD1 motherboard drivers ftp://ftp.fic.com.tw/motherboard/dri...ilities_v1.27/

audio offers Realtek and Via

Hope this helps

no sound windows xp

After trying all of the above solutions, none worked for me, I finally found out that windows xp was not installing my sound devices. to get your sound back go to my computer click on hard drive c folder. Look for sound device setup and install. It is so simple when you know. I hope this helps someone from spending as much time as I did trying to resolve this.
Good Luck,
RG

restored sound... finally -THANKS!

ok, I have an e-machines T6212 (onborad sound card realtek AC'97, AMD 64 Athlon...). I got a virus and had to reinstall windows xp home edition, and for wks on end I had no sound. tried everything... all the troubleshooting help menus, update driver wizards, etc., etc. (Then went even farther and disabled the onbaord sound in the BIOS and a lot of other things that didn't work). I was pretty sure that I need the driver, but couldn't find it. Finally, thanks to help from everyone, I went to the source - Realtek - and downloaded the whole pkg that I needed. This is the link that worked for me:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC

(basically go to realtek.com, click on the downloads tab, click the third option which is AC'97 Audio Codec Pkg (Software), agree to terms, and choose your OS)

I chose the express site for Windows xp
downloaded, installed, enabled setting in BIOS
and oh, how sweet to hear sounds coming out of my computer again.
yeah!
(now I can use my ipod again! WhooHoo!)
Thanks.
